The 20th Century Fox release, which stars Matt Damon as a stranded astronaut attempting to survive alone on Mars, bowed in 2,800 locations Thursday night to $2.5 million. The pic, which was made on a budget of $109 million, expanded to 3,826 locations on Friday. Based on Andy Weir’s novel, “The Martian” is on track to join the ranks of high-grossing October releases. Current top-dog “Gravity,” which launched on the same weekend in 2013, is the one to beat with its $55.8 million haul, followed by 2011’s “Paranormal Activity 3” with $52.6 million, 2010’s “Jackass 3D” with $50.4 million and 2013’s “Taken 2” with $49. 5 million. “Gravity” pulled in $17.5 million on its opening day.

Facebook Goes Down for 10 Minutes, Mass Panic Ensues

Residents of Planet Earth were shaken to the core early Thursday afternoon when Facebook — the social network that prides itself on being reliable — went down worldwide.

Early reports suggest that all 1.49 billion Facebook users across the globe were unable to access their accounts as of 12:30 p.m. ET, seeing error pages instead of their own newsfeeds upon navigating to the site.

"Sorry, something went wrong," read the message most users were greeted with. "We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can."

While the site appeared to be loading again for some by approximately 12:45 p.m. ET (albeit slowly, with many features missing,) Venture Beat reports that the complete mass outage lasted at least 10 minutes

According to Facebook's own Platform Status for developers, the Facebook Graph API became unavailable as of 12:30 p.m. ET. The issue was said to officially resolved at 1:22 p.m. ET.

"A Facebook-wide issue means the Facebook Graph API is temporarily unavailable," read a message posted on the developers site at 12:35 p.m. ET. "We're working with our core infrastructure teams to identify the issue and will update you when we have more information."

As Business Insider reports, Facebook users reacted similarly in January when the site went down for an hour due to technical issues caused by changes to configuration systems. During that outage, some users reportedly even called 911 to report the network failure.

CBC News has reached out to Facebook for comment on what may have caused this most recent service outage, and will update this story as more information is known.

Daily Fantasy Football: NFL Week 3 Picks

The Methodology: PredictionMachine.com simulates each game 50,000 times to determine which players are most likely to product the most points each week based on the scenatio. Here are highlights of their optimal lineup for Week 2, which spans Sunday at 1 pm (EST) through the Monday night game. Picks are chosen based on their expected points relative to daily fantasy salary. These picks are intended for use in the DraftKings Guaranteed Prize Pool contest and are based on the top 15% of player performances across the 50,000 simulations.

For the complete lineup and for optimized lineups in other daily fantasy formats, visit their website.

Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks (vs. Bears, $7,000, 34.2 projected points): The defending NFC champions are 0-2 and will look to right the behind Wilson and they face a Chicago defense that has struggled all year, ranking 25th in yards allowed per pass play, 31st in sack rate and 32nd (last) in points allowed. The key here is value as Wilson is the eighth most costly quarterback even though he’s projected to score the most fantasy points.

Allen Hurns, WR, Jaguars (at Patriots, $3,700, 19.8 projected points): Game flow is the big story here. The Patriots are favored by two touchdowns and there is a high likelihood that the Jaguars will have to throw early and often, which means lots of targets for Jacksonville’s No. 2 wideout. The defending Super Bowl champs are defensively challenged thus far, ranking bottom 10 in most key stats, including yards allowed (29th) and points allowed (23rd). Remember, it’s never garbage time when YOUR guys score. That’s when other people’s trash becomes your fantasy treasure.

James Starks, RB, Packers (Chiefs, $3,000, 21.5 projected points): The salary is disconnected from his expected role Monday night as starting running back, given first-teamer Eddie Lacy (ankle) is not expected to play. Riding the offensive wave created by the hyper efficient Aaron Rodgers is a huge plus, as the Packers even against a solid Chiefs defense should be in the red zone early and often. Playing at home is also a plus. But there is some risk if Lacy toughs it out and starts after getting carted off the field last week. The good news: this uncertainty creates better pot odds because Starks’s ownership even at this bargain price thus won’t be sky high.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, Patriots (vs. Jaguars, $7,400, 31.8 projected points): This is an insane price for a tight end. It’s $1,600 more than the next highest (Jimmy Graham) and $2,400 more than the rest of the field. A spread like this is extremely unusual. But this is how much better Gronk is than every other man at his position. Will this be a game where the Patriots try to ramp up their running game, which has been mostly ignored the first two weeks? That seems unlikely and even then the Patriots will feed No. 87.

Houston Texans, DST (Buccaneers, $3,200, 12.8 projected points): Even though Jameis Winston played better last week (he could hardly play worse), the Bucs still yielded seven points to the Saints defense, which may be the worst in football. The Texans of course also have J.J. Watt, who seems overdue for a defensive score. Plus Winston is getting sacked on a 30th worst 13% of pass plays. Another key for picking defense is the game location and the Texans are at home, too.

VW Tried To Cover Up Emissions Scandal When Regulators Started Probe

Volkswagen America is understood to have sent letters to California owners of diesel-powered Audis and Volkswagens asking them to bring their cars in to a dealership for a software upgrade.

VW Tried To Cover Up Emissions Scandal When Regulators Started Probe

The crisis engulfing disgraced car giant Volkswagen deepened as news emerged of the extent to which the company knew about the emissions-rigging scandal and further top executives faced the axe.

Audi R&D boss Ultirch Hackenberg, Porsche’s Wolfgang Hatz and VW’s US chief executive Michael Horn, who admitted “we totally screwed up”, were reported to be in line to lose their jobs at a meeting of the supervisory board on Friday.

The stricken car maker is under pressure to repair its bruised reputation by both the German government and its own shareholders. The economy and transport minister of VW’s home state, Lower-Saxony - which owns about 20pc of VW - said those responsible for allowing the manipulation to happen must be held to account.

News has also emerged that VW knew about the device cheat in the US and tried to cover it up last year, after American regulators started investigating.

In April, Volkswagen America is understood to have sent letters to California owners of diesel-powered Audis and Volkswagens asking them to bring their cars in to a dealership for a software upgrade.

What VW failed to explain was that the letters were part of a recall meant to satisfy government regulators who were looking into discrepancies between laboratory emissions test results and pollution levels emitted by the cars under normal use. At the time, VW insisted the problem was only a technical glitch.

VW has already admitted that 11m of its cars around the world might contain the so-called “defeat” devices, which can cheat emissions tests by detecting when a car is being tested and force the engine to emit fewer harmful gases.

The German government, meanwhile, revealed that the secret “defeat devices” were also built into the company’s cars in Europe as well as in the US, though it isn’t yet clear if it helped cheat the emissions tests, as was the case in the US.

German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said: “We have been informed that also in Europe, vehicles with 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines are affected by the manipulations that are being talked about.”

VW has set aside €6.5bn to help cover the costs of any fallout from the crisis, including a recall, but industry experts and analysts believe this figure will need to be much higher as governments around the world launch investigations into the scandal.

German public prosecutors are conducting a preliminary criminal inquiry into the company, while the US Justice Department has also launched a criminal probe and the US Environmental Protection Agency could slap VW with penalties totalling billions of dollars.

The world’s biggest car manufacturer also faces the prospect individual and class action lawsuits around the world as well as further action from governments in France, Italy, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, who are all looking into the matter.

The deception has even prompted some financial institutions to boycott VW. Scandinavia-based Nordea Bank has barred its traders from buying Volkswagen shares and bonds for six months.

Credit ratings agencies S&P and Moody’s have both placed VW on "negative creditwatch", as the automaker looks likely to incur "substantial’ penalties", following a similar move from Fitch on Wednesday.

Seat, the Spanish subsidiary of German group Volkswagen, installed the infamous pollution-cheating software in more than 500,000 cars made in Spain, daily newspaper El Pais reported, citing unnamed sources with ties to the company.

Shares in VW dipped 2pc on Thursday and are 26pc lower than before news of the scandal broke.
